Five Counties Across North Texas Commemorate “National Salvation Army Week”
In an effort to unite residents of North Texas to address issues affecting our most vulnerable neighbors year-round, Dallas, Collin, Denton, Tarrant, and Ellis counties have issued individual proclamations declaring May 15-21, 2023, as “National Salvation Army Week.”
The proclamations will recognize the ongoing efforts of the largest social service organization in the region to help those in the community who are combatting poverty, addiction, and homelessness. With 17 centers of operation across North Texas, The Salvation Army is uniquely positioned to provide year-round social services to over 80,000 people annually, including feeding, financial assistance, substance abuse recovery programs, after-school programs, emergency shelter for children and families, and more.
On Tuesday, May 16, three counties will honor the community’s generosity and commitment by inviting Salvation Army officers to each of the following commissioners court meetings:
- Denton County: 9 a.m. at 1 Courthouse Drive in Denton
- Tarrant County: 10 a.m. at 100 E. Weatherford Street in Fort Worth
- Ellis County: 2 p.m. at 101 W. Main Street in Waxahachie
“The Salvation Army arrived in North Texas in 1892 and throughout our nearly 100 years of service, we remain steadfast to our mission of serving our most vulnerable neighbors whenever and wherever the need exists,” said Major Paul McFarland, area commander of The Salvation Army of North Texas. “President Dwight D. Eisenhower first declared ‘National Salvation Army Week’ in 1954, and each year it gives us the opportunity to celebrate how, together, we can build a better North Texas.”
Many people think of The Salvation Army of North Texas as bell ringers and Red Kettles at Christmas, but few know the role the organization plays in helping those that are struggling throughout the year.
North Texans are facing greater hardship than ever before with the impacts of inflation, rising evictions, and lingering effects of the pandemic. The organization understands that the holidays are when people tend to give the most, but need exists all year long, as does The Salvation Army’s service.
