Signs of abuse

What is abuse?

Domestic violence goes beyond physical abuse. The Duluth Model of Power and Control demonstrates the many ways a victim may experience abuse.

Does your partner?

  • Embarrass you with put-downs?
  • Look at you or act in ways that scare you?
  • Control what you do, who you see or talk to or where you go?
  • Stop you from seeing your friends or family members?
  • Take your money, make you ask for money or refuse to give you money?
  • Make all of the decisions?
  • Tell you that you’re a bad parent or threaten to take away or hurt your children?
  • Prevent you from working or attending school?
  • Act like the abuse is no big deal, it’s your fault, or even denies doing it?
  • Destroy your property or threaten to kill your pets?
  • Intimidate you with guns, knives or other weapons?
  • Shove you, slap you, choke you, or hit you?
  • Force you to drop charges?
  • Threaten to commit suicide?
  • Threaten to kill you?

I am a stronger woman now.

This place was the best that has happened to me.” -Anonymous

They gave me hope. They gave me refuge…These people held my hand; they helped me, when my own family wouldn’t help me.They kept me safe… By the grace of God I’m still here. They saved my life. They actually saved my life.” – Roberta

Building Healthy Relationships was my favorite group of all. While the Dynamics of Domestic Violence [group] teaches you a lot about where you come from, Building Healthy Relationships teaches you where you want to go... I am a better person than I have ever been in my entire life because of the experiences I encountered while at The Salvation Army.” – Pamela

“I have shelter, a job, and a safe place for my boys. I feel free to create the life I always wanted.”
